Changes in deleting uncataloged paperbacks

Please see below note from Syma, Head of Tech Services, about changes in way uncataloed paperbakcs are to be handled:

As you may know, we have been experiencing system problems when staff start deleting uncataloged paperbacks. HALAN staff believe the issue is related to our use of the call # "UNCATALOGED PAPERBACK" in the MARC 092 field field as well as the item level call # field. These are indexed fields in III so every time an uncataloged item is deleted, the system searches through the index to remove it from that index. To solve this problem, we will be moving the call # in the bib record to the MARC 090 tag which is not indexed and we will be removing the item call #'s completely. What this means is that when you log in to My Account with the staff view, you can still look up the title of an uncataloged paperback and it will show a call # of UNCATALOGED PAPERBACK for that title but there will be no call # displayed for each attached item. Making these changes will take several days but we expect that most of it will be completed by next week.

We are also planning to make Paperback Classics their own category to make it easier to make sure that they do display in the public catalog. They will be visible with a call # of PAPERBACK CLASSIC and they will also have the same as individual item call #s. Since we are moving them to a new category separate from the rest of the uncataloged paperbacks, it would be possible to allow customers to place holds on them. Please get back to me with your feedback on whether or not to make titles identified as Paperback Classics holdable.

Thanks,
Syma

Many thanks for your kind consideration.
