The following points were addressed at the monthly June meeting of the Neighborhood Library's Branch Managers Meeting fyi:
I. Bi-Lingual pay (Meller Langord, Deputy Director, Public Services)
A. New policies and procedures effectice on 7/1/2009
B. Employees eligible for bilingual pay:
1. World Language Center
2. Technical Services
3. NL Hubs
(a) specific hubs: Alief, Carnegie, Park Place, Ring, Stanaker, & Walter
(b) criteria used in determining hubs
i. geographic location
ii. ethnicity
iii. languages spoken in community
(c) Employees receiving bilingual pay are expected to put their talents to use HPL
system wide
i. reference
ii. circulation
iii. programming
iv. training for citizenship classes
II. After-hours contact information (Jason Stephens, Planning & Facilities)
A. List of branch contact information in hierarchical order with updated phone numbers
given
B. Location specific passcodes to be developed
III. FY 09 Statistics (Ann Otto, Planning & Evaluation Coordinator)
A. Please be advised that FY 09 stats are in July
IV. Safety Committee (Laurie Covington, Collier Branch Manager)
A. Introduction: Consultants judged HPL staff poorly prepared or knowledgeable about city
of Houston and HPL safety policies and procedures
B. HPL asks all Branch Managers to include some public safety item on their monthly staff
meeting agendas
C. If there is a specific staff member who is rapidly enthusiastic about public safety, that staff
member may be asked to volunteer to held staff preparedness
V. NL Announcements (Gina Stemmer, Chief, NL)
A. Discussion about training staff at certain HPL locations (Looscan, Stella Link) for issuing
citation for violations of handicapped parking
B. programmed-focused televisions and dvds have been bought for NL.
C. FY 09 Annual Reports are due in July.
